Ship in the Ice

Considering it’s one of the coldest and most inhospitable places on earth there’s something strangely alluring about exploring the arctic. Of course today’s modern conveniences make it a lot easier than it used to be to traverse this terrifying terrain, but if you want to get a taste of what it was like to be one of the first to discover it, there’s a treat in store for you with the rather pragmatically named Ship in the Ice.

It’s the world’s only ice-bound hotel ship, which isn’t entirely surprising, and will give you a chance to follow in the footsteps of polar explorers from times of yore by exploring the stunning beauty of untouched Svalbard landscapes – so breathtaking in fact that The British Sunday Times has twice named the Ship as one of the five places to visit before you die.

Fortunately there is a degree of comfort to be enjoyed as 10 cabins offer hot and cold water, mains power and a shower/toilet, with a licensed bar and two lounges to kick back in – certainly privileges that were not afforded to the brave souls who traipsed the same area 100 years ago.
